Rooted in a commitment to healthy living and self-sustainability, David Verdugo (AKA Farmer Dave)  harmonizes traditional farming practices with modern innovation at Verdugo Farms. Farmer Dave’s path has been marked by milestones, most notably achieving poultry farm status from the United States Department of Agriculture and California Department of Food and Agriculture and  evolving into a thriving 90% organic poultry farm today.

What inspired you to get into foodservice?

“Honestly, I was inspired by providing clean, healthy, farm-to-fork living for my family and myself. I’m trying to be self-sustaining and self-sufficient. Also, I wanted to teach my kids what the circle of life is all about one egg at a time! We raise our chickens with love, appreciation and respect.”

What do you love about your business?

“I mean, what’s not to love? Have you ever watched a flock of chickens in their element? It’s better than the best TV show you could ever watch. You’ll laugh…you’ll cry.”

What’s the most interesting thing to happen to your business?

“Two things: Becoming a USDA CDFA poultry farm and having Cambro post my stories every now and again on Instagram!”

What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome?

“Spending years of learning through daily problems, tasks, obstacles, victories, etc. and putting it all together after 5+ years to have the little free range, 90% organic poultry farm we have now!”

Which Cambro products help make your business work?

“The large round containers for chicken scraps, I believe they are 6L. They also make great egg collectors. With some straw in them, you can collect a couple dozen or more at a time. The large 5 gallon one is great for keeping chicken feed, scraps, or dry corn to sprout for making organic chicken feed. I also love the smaller containers for household kitchen use!” Verdugo Farms also uses CamSquares to hold chicken feed.
