This donut shop had us at “Halo.” Located in Moncton, NB, Canada, co-owner Jacques Allain made the sweet decision to start making Halo Donuts in 2020. Less than 2 years after they opened a pop-up selling their donuts out of a shipping container, Halo Donuts has 2 brick-and-mortar locations. Allain explains what makes Halo Donuts so heavenly—and we guarantee by the end of this blog your mouth will be watering!
What inspired you to get into foodservice?
“I’ve been in the foodservice industry for 9 years now, my background was mostly in bartending. We thought our city deserved a good old fashioned donut shop, so we made one!”
What do you love about your business?
“Everyone loves donuts, they all smile instantly when they walk through the door. At Halo, we make our dough fresh every morning and we make our icings from scratch using premium quality ingredients. We also try to keep it fun with some retro flavors! We have the classics like Maple Bars, Boston Creams and Apple Fritters. Then, we have the new-school flavors like Dunkaroo, Caramel Cheesecake and Blue Raspberry.”
What’s the most interesting thing to happen to your business?
“One and a half years ago, we started out by making donuts in a shipping container as a pop-up shop that was only going to be open for 3 months. Now, we have two full-time locations and we have a team of 13 people. We’re lucky to have a few sister restaurants, so when the pandemic hit, we moved over from the shipping container to a fine dining restaurant that we occupied during the early hours of the night to supply our small storefront offsite.”
What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome?
“We started in the early days of the pandemic and it’s been challenges after challenges since day one. We’re now seeing some light at the end of the tunnel!”
