Got Milk Cartons? How Schools can Effectively Hold, Transport Beverages

The milk carton has been an iconic school lunch staple for generations. Today, most school foodservice programs offer milk to kids at both breakfast and lunch. As schools prepare to reopen their doors to students, meal service will likely look different than previous years. While many details are still unknown, one thing is for sure: safe food holding and transportation will continue to be high priorities. Whether you’re providing meals in shifts, directly to classrooms or through meal distribution, using effective insulated transport products will make all the difference.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, Charise Johnson, Food Service Manager at Propel Schools in Pittsburgh, Pa., wanted to implement breakfast in the classroom to combat low breakfast participation. After being awarded a grant, Johnson set out to find the right equipment to support her operation’s goals.

After weighing all of her options, Johnson chose the Cam GoBox® Milk Crate Box because it is lightweight, easy to open, easy to clean and a milk crate of 70 half pint milk cartons can be placed inside. It was especially important to Johnson that her equipment be manageable enough for the students to carry because they deliver breakfast to each classroom.

“The [students] like them. They’re not heavy. The kids actually enjoy delivering the meals because they’re picked based on merit and if they are a good student and so they do like being acknowledged that way,” said Johnson.

In addition to being lightweight, the Milk Crate Box provides at least four hours of hot or cold temperature retention thanks to their eco-friendly, high performance expanded polypropylene construction.

“When we got the Cambros, the kids did tell us they could see a difference between the milk before and with them being in the [Milk Crate Box]. There was definitely a difference, even the teachers said that there was a difference,” said Johnson.

Johnson’s instincts about breakfast in the classroom were spot on. What was previously 20 percent participation rose to nearly 80 percent with their new model.

“It is wonderful,” said Johnson.

Ideal for feeding in the classroom and grab-n-go, the Milk Crate Box is designed with an adjustable web strap and molded in handles for easy carrying. Resistant to most oil, grease an chemicals, the Milk Crate Box can be sanitized with a cloth or run through a dishwasher to maintain food safety.
